Life Skills
We have a tradition of involving pupils in all areas of daily life and of expecting each person to contribute to the tasks within the houses and the education programme. This engenders a culture where each is encouraged to become as independent as possible, while being a valued contributor to the school community.
We actively promote opportunities, within the rhythms of daily life and in formal lessons, for pupils to develop skills and independence in the following areas:
- Personal health and wellbeing – appearance, accessing medical services, personal hygiene, learning about oneself, likes and dislikes, who I am.
- Communication and social skills – appropriate behaviour, relating to others, ability to express needs and wishes.
- General education and spiritual development – awareness of the world around us, opportunity to access weekly religious service, celebration of religious festivals.
- Accessing the local community – using public services such as buses, trains, banks, post offices, swimming pools, shopping, visiting the café, money handling, speaking for oneself.
- Safety issues – road safety, how to use equipment safely, food and hygiene, abuse prevention.
- Food handling and preparation.
- Self help skills – problem solving, care for the physical environment, personal care.
Accredited life skills modules are currently being piloted using the EQUALS Moving On scheme.
