Life Skills

We have a tradition of involving pupils in all areas of daily life and of expecting each person to contribute to the tasks within the houses and the education programme. This engenders a culture where each is encouraged to become as independent as possible, while being a valued contributor to the school community.Waiting for a train in Bournemouth

We actively promote opportunities, within the rhythms of daily life and in formal lessons, for pupils to develop skills and independence in the following areas:

  • Personal health and wellbeing – appearance, accessing medical services, personal hygiene, learning about oneself, likes and dislikes, who I am.
  • Communication and social skills – appropriate behaviour, relating to others, ability to express needs and wishes.
  • General education and spiritual development – awareness of the world around us, opportunity to access weekly religious service, celebration of religious festivals.
  • Accessing the local community – using public services such as buses, trains, banks, post offices, swimming pools, shopping, visiting the café, money handling, speaking for oneself.
  • Safety issues – road safety, how to use equipment safely, food and hygiene, abuse prevention.
  • Food handling and preparation.
  • Self help skills – problem solving, care for the physical environment, personal care.

Accredited life skills modules are currently being piloted using the EQUALS Moving On scheme.
