Lower School

Classes for pupils aged up to 14 are grouped according to age and the teacher stays with the class throughout the Lower School, providing pupils with security and continuity. Teaching balances whole-class, small group and individual approaches, with appropriate learning support according to individual needs.Fire and rescue service during an assembly

A feature of the education is the main lesson, the first lesson of the day, which incorporates the daily rhythms of settling the children in class and the opportunity to focus on a topic theme each day for a period of 1 to 3 weeks. There is an emphasis on teaching through a range of visual, artistic, dramatic and practical activities, supporting the topic themes studied.

Small-group and individual work in literacy, numeracy and communication enables pupils to work on specific learning targets. Other lessons include social education, art, gym, choir, eurythmy, handwork, painting, modelling and swimming.

The pupils' social engagement with their peer group is encouraged and is supported by social education lessons. Week-long residential class trips during the summer term to the New Forest or other destinations are opportunities to extend learning and strengthen peer relationships.
