Statement of Purpose

As a Camphill school we are committed to maintaining a therapeutic school community environment, according to the principles of Rudolf Steiner. We strive to maximise for our pupils the diverse social and educational opportunities of community living, within a safe and secure environment. We believe that mutual recognition and acceptance, within a distinct community setting, enables both individual independence and the social connectedness, which promote personal growth and change.Pupils' Guide to the Sheiling School

We seek to establish, maintain and promote:

  • A living, working and learning environment that is non-institutional, i.e. is comfortable, beautiful and natural, as befitting a home away from home.
  • A connection to nature, the seasons and festivals of the year.
  • A healthy diet and appreciation of good food based on natural and organic foods, many of which are grown on the Trust’s farm.
  • A non-denominational approach to Christian values and Christian teaching.
  • A continuity and consistency of care and education based on a core staff group, many of whom are resident at the school, who are committed to the principles and ideals of the school.

We aim to:

  • The joy of movement...the galloping horses gameprovide excellent education, care and therapy according to each pupil’s individual needs.
  • adopt a pupil-centred approach to policy and practice.
  • demonstrate to the pupils and to others that they are able to make a positive contribution to the school community.
  • direct each pupil’s attention towards socially acceptable activities and behaviour.
  • provide opportunities for each pupil to:
    • fulfil their individual potential;
    • develop their ability to form personal relationships;
    • increase their practical and self help skills.
